The inside of the tire where the patch is , is about the size of a half dollar so you need about half that distance from the puncture. Judging from your pic I would've had no problem patching that. And the tire integrity will only be an issue if you have someone "PLUG" the tire cause they suck or someone tries to patch the sidewall..... Trust me I've seen it all. And if someone tells you that mounting and dis-mounting your tire will ruin the bead cause you have 35's are idiots !!!! Unless you have rubber band tires or run flats you wont have those problems.

Don't plug it, patch it. But if I were racing I would buy another. No sense in crashing to save a few hundred.

I didn't know that plug and patch were different terms. Hmmm well I'll have a backup tire then. I'm fine with that honestly. Where's Jazzer when I need him lol

I think you're doing the right thing getting a new tire.I believe it could've been fixed but now you'll have a spare and piece of mind at the track.

Could have been fixed for sure with a patch.
But I can agree with not using it at the track.
Safety is #1 I agree CRASH.... , but for sure can be use as a spare.
Where that hole is should be okay to patch legally its not on the side wall and looks to be a good inch away.

On my old winter beater it took 3 plugs with glue in a cut on the sidewall. Tire out lasted the car. Almost 2 years.

that is very border line if it is with in a half inch of the tread it can not be repaired but if it is more than a half inch away take it to a shop that will patch and plug it for you i know for sure discount tire/ americas tire will do both a patch and a plug and it should be free as well

I guess you can't go wrong with buying a brand new tire. As for using that one as a back-up, whichever shop you take it to, make sure the patch plug they use looks like this I know sears uses them because I worked in the auto center for 3 years. That type is the best way to fix a hole in a tire.
