has anyone fabbed up their own no-drill license plate bracket?
the concept looks fairly simple and all the pieces should be available at your local hardware store.
there are a few companies that sell these things (craigs license plate brackets, skenedesign.com, etc).

No front plate needed here, but if it was I would fabricate something like that. Most h/w stores have 1/8" x 3/4" or 1" flat stock, and the slots would not be needed for custom brackets--in fact they could likely be once piece for our cars.
Something to keep in mind; aluminum flat stock does not tolerate sharp 90° bends without fracturing, make it a radiused band (1/4" or better) or two closely spaced 45° bends...

They have something like that on AM. Yes you have to drill but you can tuck it under your car when you're at a car show, or in a different state. I have one on my car. That's why I was able to mount it at the bottom of my front bumper. See pics below. I had it mounted on my bumper (had to drill holes into it). Now bottom pic I mounted it on the bottom of my bumper and can actually slide it up under my bumper if need be.
