Default What is the safe mark for PYRO TEMP?

I have a 5.4 2v and was curious on what a safe pyro temp is? Right now I am around 600-700 at idle and cruising at 70mph its at 1100-1200 seems a bit high to me.

Isn't that something you worry about on Diesels not gas engines?

EGTs are normally for Forced Induction applications. It can be used to give you an idea about your fuel-burn characteristics and whether your are over fueling. On a Diesel, 1200 is about the max save for VERY short timeframes like a second or two. On a gas FI engine, it is typical to see 1300-1600 at WOT. For an NA application, I would think that as long as you aren't breaking say 1400 you should be OK. I am no expert though.

It also depends on where you are reading the temp from. Closer to the cylinder is better, but if you are just reading from one probe, you'd need to have it AFTER all exhaust gas meets.

i have the probe in the collector. I was just curious because my buddy has a diesel and the redline started at 1250 and i figured it would be relatively the same but I have also heard of the 1300 -1600 WOT mark for a gas and I don't think it reaches that at WOT.

You should be OK then.

My friend has been working on a relatively inexpencive 8-probe V8 EGT system that I am supposed to test-bed in my truck some time soon. (Should probably get the truck driveable first.) It reads from every cylinder and then you can choose to read each cylinder, 2 at a time, avg for both banks, or overall average for all. The demo that he made up for the display was pretty sweet. It's just that the probes are outragiously expencive.
