Default New key question

I need to get another key cut however when I went they said mine has a chip in it. Is that normal in a 96 i thought they didn't start doing that until later and if it does then is their Any where else other than the dealer to get it cut

Take a look at the key and see if there is any chip on it. If so then I'm pretty sure you have to go to the dealer. Although the key cutter at Home Depot once told me that they can now do any keys even with a chip.

A 1996 Mustang has the PATS type A, meaning there is a transponder ("chip") in the key. Any decent locksmith, Walmart, or Ace Hardware can supply and cut a proper key.

The procedure for programming the new key into the PATS is in the owner's manual--you can download one from Ford here...
