tips on replacing power steering pump??
I'm replacing the power steering pump on my 2002 GT, and there does not seem to be much info on it available by googling, no youtube videos either, which I found pretty odd. If anyone can help out I would appreciate it. Right now, I've got the pulley off and I'm about to try to get the pump itself out. Not sure if I should jack the car up or not, right now I've just got the radiator top tank off and working from there. Also not sure about the procedure for draining/replacing the fluid and whether I need to worry about air in the system. And if I need to replace the hoses or check them. Any ideas?
If you are replacing the pump, may as well replace hoses too.
When I work on a PS System, I always drain the fluid by loosening/removing the hoses from the rack and pinion (lowest point). Be sure to have extra orings if to replace the ones on the hoses if you are not getting new hoses. new hoses will already have new ones installed.
Don't know about removing the pump specifically from a new edge GT but since you managed to get the pulley off, it's just a matter of taking off the mounting bolts disconnecting the hoses to get it off/out.
Air in the system is easily removed. With the new pump (and hoses) installed, fill up the reservoir and spin the pump clockwise by hand a few times checking the fluid level. Put the belt on, start the car (make sure the cap is back on the reservoir), and let is sit for a few seconds.
It will probably sound god awful for a few seconds. Take the cap off the reservoir top off the fluid, put the cap back on and put proceed to give the steering wheel a few lock-to-lock turns. You may get a bit more noise for a few seconds. Center the wheels and check the fluid level. Top it off as needed.
Do this a couple more time and it will work the air out of the system.
After a couple days of normal driving, double check the fluid level, top it off if needed and you're done.

Dextron IV essentially replaced Mercon and all previous versions of Dextron, II, and III. Type F hasn't been used in nearly decades.
So, just buy Dextron IV. The stuff that is labeled specifically PS fluid is either for Foreign cars with special specs or to overcharge you for what is essentially tranny fluid.
