Default 4.6 performance boosts

HI, I just joined this forum and was a FoxBody lifer until I got my 03 GT! Love this car! Not tremendously knowledgeable on the 4.6 motor. Are there any tips to get more performance out of it that does not require engine work? I believe the motor is stock it has a SLP loud mouth header back x pipe system with Hi flow cats(sounds like the fastes car on earth)! And probably stick gearing. Thanks in advance

Do you have a budget and any specific goals? Let us know what those are.

What I can tell you is that the usual bolt-ons won't do a whole lot. Getting any sort of real power out of these engines without a power adder is going to be expensive.

Throw some gears at it, 3.73 or 4.10 (my preference is the latter), midpipe, tb and plenum, tune. That stuff will wake it up a little, especially the gears. Beyond that, start shopping cams. Or skip all the BS and go straight for a centri blower.

thanks for the reply. I just want to wake it up a little the second gear acceleration is a little sluggish then third really pulls. Is that normal in these cars? Like I said I’ve been a foxbody guy forever and thinks my first 4.6

No, 2nd gear should be exciting. More than 3rd anyway lol. Being that the car is new to you I would just go through it with all the routine maintenance sort of items.... Fluids, new plugs, fuel filter, get a can of MAF cleaner (they make a specific product for this, don't substitute with brake cleaner etc).

Sounds to me like a gear swap should be on your list though. Parts aren't particularly expensive, you're looking at maybe $300 there - ring & pinion set and master bearing/seal kit. Shop labor should be 4 to 5 hours at whatever their rate. You will also need to recalibrate the speedometer (with 4.10's it will read about 40 mph high lol), on the cheap end you can get a speedcal device, or go straight for a handheld tuner and do it that way.

Does second gear feel sluggish because of possibly tire spin? The car should pull harder in second than third gear, that's just strange.

Does the car have an aftermarket tune for the exhaust mods? Is the 'service engine soon' light on?
