I know, I know... but I'm still driving it on the street and much bigger than that really effects drivability (again - wuuuss). -Joe

Well here's my short tirade on why that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. 4.10 gears in a basically stock Mustang will actually increase your top end. WHAT??? You say? Here's why. And I'm really tired of explaining it so all you others that like to give this advice "4.10's are WAY too much gear for your car on the street" take note.
Mustangs do not have enough horsepower to overcome the drag at high speeds. Let's say for instance that your top end is around 155 drag limited. With the 4.10 gear, your engine doesn't have to work as hard to turn the rear tires. So not only will you get there faster, but since you're now actually using the horsepower more efficiently, you may actually get a 165 mph top speed.
Again, there is a point to where the gears will slow you down. But you'll need to be making way more power over stock. Get the idea?

I'm a complete noob with this Mustang but I've been listening to you folks talk about gears being the "best bang for the buck" in terms of speed/accel. So I told a guy at work about this and he claims it would be stupid to change the gear ratios because I would lose my top end speed/acceleration.
He went on a long tirade and explained how gears worked in a nutshell.
So, before I get my hopes all up and high for "GEARS", mabey I should get the scoop.
What and how much would I be giving up with 4.10 gears?
I have a manual GT.

Thats the way I would have done it. But nobody listens to me for some reason. God knows I don't know what I'm doing.
For the record, I've got a set of 4.30's going in my fox very shortly. And I'm concerned that it might not be enough gear.

Why would you say that????
Are you saying it's a bad idea to go 4:30 on a SC?
Please explain.....
I have 4:30s with t converter on my 05. I also have a Vortech.

Well, I'd put in 4.30's if I wasn't putting a S/C on.
From what I've read, Ford's seem to be the least whine but someone above mentioned another brand was quiet as well.

I just wanted to know why that statement was made. I'm not an expert on the subject. I did blow my engine recently but I was running higher than 10 psi. I'm back at 8 now but I'm wondering if the 4:30 and converter are making it easier for the engine to go off the rev limiter. If that's the case with a poorly tuned engine at high boost, it could be the reason why my engine fell apart....

Those that have 4.10's, any issues with the oem driveshaft vibrating? Since its rotating at a higher revolution, was just curios?
Thanks

Not the OEM but I had a 1-piece aluminum driveshaft that vibrated like crazy and in the end - we blamed it on the gears and mainly the angle due to my suspension set-up...

O.k. chevykiller, you had a Vortec S/C 5 speed right? So, 3.90's or 4.10's?
I'm done with the 3.55's but I do drive long distance at high speeds and also enjoy the 1/4 mile track on the weekends. I'm torn on the right gear for me...
Any advice please, anyone?

Question for some of you who can remember,
If you went from fully and completely stock and added gears as your first mod/install, what times did you do after on your 60 and 1/4's?
