Default 06-07 gt question

A buddy of mine wants to pick up a 06-07 gt when we get back from iraq and he wants to either slap a turbo on it or a supercharger. What can the stock 5speed transmission handle?

The transmission probably won't be your weak link.

The bottom end will support upwards of 400+ rwhp only for a time. The more HP, the shorter the time. I 've seen people on this board talk about smoking their clutches, snapping axles, and, yes, breaking input shafts but by far the most common explosion seems to be the stock motor with FI.

I'm sure the 5 speed has its limit and that the published rating for the TR-3650 (360 ft/lbs.) is a bit on the conservative side seeing how a lot of people are running considerably north of those numbers without leaving piles of transmissions in the ditches.

Like anything else - as youup the power and improve the transfer, you put more stress on the system. A good clutch, suspension geometry, and sticky tires will both improve your ET and put a larger shock on your transmission.

I will have to agree with gt/cs above. I would worry about clutch and drive shaft be for the transmission. and while we are on the subject. What will the stock bottom end hold? Or better yet what have you seen or heard of them holding down?

Yep drive shaft and clutch will go out first.

I have not blown one up yet so I cannot (not do I ever hope to) speak fromexperience.

However - conventionalwisdom says anything over 450 rwhp is living on borrowed time. Of course you see examples on both ends of the spectrum: One guy who put a'conservative' 400 rwhp tune in and blew up in a week and some other guy that beenrunning a 500+ hp setup for months with no issues.

Here's my strategy: I'm going FI later this year (probably turbo but the options are still on the table). I intend to tune is closer to the low end of the 400 hp range, pull the rev limiter back down to stock, and have the air/fuel a tad on the rich side. At that time I'm going to start work on a new short block with a forged bottom end so I can get stupid later [8D].

first do your engine. Then do your rear end, then do the driveshaft and then worry about the transmission.
