I think it's because of gas mileage, there are standards for cars that SUVs and light trunks don't have to meet. It's only rated at 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway with a 3.31, if it were 3.55, then I'm sure it would be 19 or 20 mpg.

That's also why the Shelby GT's have 3.73:1 in the manual, not 4.10:1, and 3.55:1 for the auto instead of 3.73:1.

I am getting a mustang gt 5 speed. I test drove an 06 that has 3.55 gears and an 08. To be honest I didnt even want the stang after driving the 08 it fell very sluggish to me. I was immediatly bored and the test ended fast. The 06 was totally different and was much more fun, it pull harder. Any way on the new ones to get 3.55's you have to get the premium + 300 for the 3.55 option. My question is: If I get the an 08 deluxe I would save alot but would end up with the boring gears. Would changing to 3.73's or 4.10 screw up my engine warranty??? I cant get this car without a warranty.

ORIGINAL: imyy4u

with all the people complaining of gear-whine on these forums, i was scared to do ANYTHING with my gears. of course 3.55 was standard on all 06 GT's...the way it should still be!!!
people get improper installs, do your homework before having someone install them and you will be fine

If the 08 has 3.31 gears, tell the dealership that you want 3.73 or 4.10 Ford Racing Gears installed and they should include it in the purchase price which should be included with the warranty. If they won't do that, changing the gears would/should not affect anything forward of the rear axle, thus not voiding the "engine" warranty.

Don't let the dealer lie to you. You do not have to get the premium package to get the 3.55 option. I have proof in my garage...

Because a car with as much torque as the GT500 would burn the tires down to the radials with anything higher.
