I would stick with the 3.73's with the auto. Nice bump from the 3.31's (assuming that is where you are starting from) and if you do go F/I down the road it would be a great set-up.
+1 zkiller on the auto tranny.

That may be the case but to me much is lost in a driving experience sorta way when you just point and stand on it. I'll always rip my own gears, the connection between man and machine is so much more enjoyable. I guess it takes the driver mod out of the equation, a brick would get it down the track the same as a driver...

A brick? Thats funny!
I hardly think it is so easy to stage and race an automatic. The launch is somewhat of an art. I've owned lots of fast cars over the last 30 years. many of them 4 or 5 speed manual transmissions. The fastest cars I owned were always automatic transmissions.

For drag racing an auto is much better in my opinion and a heck of a lot more consistent.
For street or road racing manual is defineately they way to go. I like both for their own strengths.
I know my experience was from a 99 GT 4 speed auto, but I have learned from that and others to not fear the gear. Almost everyone I know who went one ratio down from what they wanted was dissapointed myseld included.

Does anyone know if switching out your stock gears for 3.73's or 4.10's would decrease the overall life of the engine? Has this ever been researched?

get the 3.73's.. i have a 06gt autow/ those gears, 20" wheels, and a bamatunes 91race tune and it snaps my neck all the way to OD when my foot is in it and will chirp shifting into 3rd... i dont drive like the elderly by ANY means. .and im still getting 19.1 mpg i also plan on putting a whipple onas well, and will still be keeping the 3.73's.

doesn't the OD on the tranny make the car slower up top? I always turn theOD off whenever
I want the most acceleration when racing...

+1, very happy with the 3.73s, at the strip and on the street, FRPP all the way.

This isnt a 99 Mustang.
It is a 2006 and the 5R55S tranny has a super low first gear.
I have 3.73 and they are perfect for street/strip in these cars.
