Default detonation?

I had my car on the dyno a while back, and it sounded like someone was makin' some popcorn. It only did this inthe upper rpm range.

The thing is i have never heard this while driving down the road. I assume this was detonation. correct? It is not a daily driver so it sits alot. I wonder if this caused some condensation leading to this problem. Also the car was pretty hot don't know if that plays a role or not.I immediately went to my 87 tune.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks.

I had a predator tuner and had the same problem. pinging at high rpms. I got rid of the tuner and put it back to stock for a while and used 89 octane, no problems. No my car is supercharged with no problems.

My car has always had a tendancy to detonate and hotter weather makes it worse. I had a 93 tune and had to take 2 degrees out of the timing to stop it. BP gas is much better than shell in my GT, if I put shell in the ping can come back.

Unless your car is tuned on the Dyno. The tune you receive in your tuner is a safe generic tune.To get rid of the pings or early detonation they should have fine tuned the tuner to your car while it was on the Dyno. Most of the tuners you buy on line like Brenspeed put a password in so you cant change the tune unless you go back to them.Good Luck. To me it sounds like your car is running to lean at high RPM's.Check your plugs to see if there is any melting happening. This occurs when your car runs to lean causing to run to hot at high RPM's.

I always run bp gas don't really know if it's better than the next......
The thing is i've never heard it just driving down the road. Which makes me nervous, ie is it doing this often and i just don't know it.

Thanks for the advice, i appreciate it.

I wouldn't worry, if it happens you will hear it, if you don't hear then it isn't pinging. Also, the cars computer will modify fueling and timing to prevent most detonation, the controller onlygoes 'open loop' at high rpm and WOT and that's why you only hear a car pinging under those circumstances,
