Default Starting problem

Hey everyone, I've had this problem with my mustang for a couple months now and no one can seem to figure it out. I'm still in search of a good, reputable shop that knows a thing or two about vehicles and that I can trust to do work on mine. In the meantime, I figure I'd drop by and see if anyone can tell me what the problem is right off the bat.

Almost every day, when I go to start it up and I turn the key, my mustang will not start but it also won't turn over. It doesn't make a sound at all, except on rare occasions it will turn over for literally a second or two. If I continue to turn the key with the clutch engaged it will not start no matter how many times I try. However, when I disengage and engage the clutch, while throwing the shifter **** into neutral and then into first again a couple time, it usually starts (anywhere from the second or fourth time). The problem seems to be most occuring if it has been sitting for a while, especially in the heat (it lives outside). My assumption is either I need a new starter or the battery is going out? I'm no car mechanic and everyone else has been telling me those are possible problems, but they do not know for sure..any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

clutch safety switch. the key is that you said you disengage and reengage the clutch and it starts. im assuming that when it does start it fires right up?

when i say that i mean that on the times it does decide to start for you, does it rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrvroom or does it rrvroom.

Yes, when it does start, it fires right up. How much will one of these clutch safety switches run me? What would cause one of these to go bad, anything in particular??

$26 on this site.

its a wear and tear item. they start to wear out over time. keep in mind this switch is hit every time your pressing the clutch down to shift gears(even though its only used during starting). That's a lot of wear on that switch. Not all parts are created equal either, quality defects happen. Also how hard your jamming the clutch down can affect it. it was probably a combination of all of the above. thats assuming the switch itself is bad.

the best thing would be to check the installation of the switch itself first and make sure its not loose for any reason. this could cause the whole assembly to move and fail to provide the necessary contact for your car to start.

Awsome, thanks so much everyone. I'm glad some more light was shed on this issue and I'm relieved it's not looking to be a major fix!
