Gas is no issue.
You are doing this for performance and fun.
You want more ummph to the car.
the little more 1st gear means a little more before you shift to second.
But this is a LITTLE more. Let me stress that... L I T T L E.
I find most people do NOT notice it. If they notice that the 1st gear is longer
thus giving you more time before you shift into 2nd... they don't care about it at all.
I find MUCH more often people with 3.73's wishing they got the 4.10's.
Especially when they drive people's cars with the 4.10's and feel the umpph
and throw you back in your seat when you push on the gas.
I have driven both as a lot of people have.
ALL of my Mustang Club friends who got 3.73's ended up swapping them again for
4.10's. The club has about 20 guys in it and 6 of them got 3.73's.
Then as they said.... after driving the other friend's cars with 4.10's (which was 12 of the 14 left), they swapped.
The other guys had stock Mustangs.
NOW......Like someone said before.
4.10's end of story.

I put 3.73s into my 2009 GT and regretted it. Should have gone 4.10s. The 3.31 -> 3.73 didn't make as much of a difference as I had hoped, but after dropping $600~ I just left it alone. I'm thinking about gears for this 2012 now... think I may go 4.10s even though they will be even steeper with this tranny. I don't want to regret it again though, lol.

I had 3.31's in my v6, wish I had higher. I know have 4.10's in my GT and wouldn't have it any other way. I don't spend much time in first and use 2nd to start 15-20% of the time. Makes for a longer gear My car is a daily driver and I also drove it to and from school a few times a week (90 miles round trip) and had no complaints about gas mileage. My full exhaust hurt my gas mileage more than gears did. I now get 25mpg highway at 65mph. I use to be able to get 27mpg. Didn't buy the car or want 4.10's for gas mileage so I don't really care. Also, unless you plan to break 190mph regularly, there is plenty of top end in 4.10's

Try starting in 2nd with a spec stage 3+! It doesn't like to slip at all. It's not so much wishing for a longer 1st gear, it's more the twitchiness of it with 4.10's. I'm just assuming it would be a little less twitchy with 3.73's.

The gears you need are often inversely related to the amount of power you have. After all, they multiply the torque of the motor. If you have more power, you need less multiplication of it. There is only so much traction you can get, and above a certain power threshold, you're literally running in place.
I have 3.55 gears, and roughly 500whp. With that, I'm through first gear pretty quick on street tires. If I had slicks and only raced, I'd consider 3.73 depending on what that does to my shifting. 3.73 with 2 shifts in the quarter mile will almost certainly be quicker than 4.10 gears requiring 3 ****s.
I've always thought of 3.73 gears as a great middle ground for those looking for decent power. If you're keeping it relatively stock at the engine (tune/cai only) perhaps you should go with the 4.10s and enjoy.
