I was originally of that mind set too. But about 20 years ago I had oil analysis training provided by the company I worked for and spoke to the instructors who trained people in the auto industry. 10k miles on a good synthetic is nothing and, as long as your filter is decent, you could likely go 15k miles easy. Most people don't bother to do oil analysis since they can do an oil change for the money and be good for another 10k-15k miles but a lot that DO have their oil analyzed find that it has retained all of it's protective properties beyond 10k miles.

The synthetic blend that comes in these engines from the factory is good for 7k miles. We used the blend in my wife's '06 for a long time, changing it at 5k miles because she did a good amount of short trips. Even my SUV's which see a lot of towing duty never go less than 8k miles and typically 10k miles between oil changes.
