Racing with an Automatic
I posted this earlier and it ended up in the “New member area” because it wouldn’t let me post into the “Speed Zone.” It was suggested that I move it over here so here we go….
I have a 07 GTCS convertible with automatic and 3:31 gears. I have added a JLT CAI, Kooks Headers, hi-flow cats/X-pipe, under drive pulleys and a Brenspeed 93 octane tune. All done by the new Brenspeed shop in Cedar Hill. Making 304 RWHP on the dynojet (259 RWHP stock).
It still has the original BF Goodrich tires and I am having a hard time launching it at the strip. I was running pretty consistent mid 9.20’s (1/8 mile track) stock but the best I have been able to do since the mods was one pass at 8.95 @ 81mph. The rest have been in the 9.4-9.6 range due to tire spin. Drag Radials have been suggested along with changing out the upper and lower control arms and perhaps adding a “watts” linkage, although that seems more about cornering than straight line acceleration.
I am planning on adding “Detroit Rocker” cams in the not too distant future but there is no reason to add more power until I can transmit it to the street.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yea LCAs will be a good bet but in order for u to get the power to the pavement at the strip you will need drag tires. Nitto makes some good drag street tires that u might be able to hook with. If u ever put FI on your car I would suggest drags for sure then bc it's very unsafe to go down the strip with streets on and have that kind of power. And if your looking for a quicker time get a torque convertor instead of cams.
I have had my DRs now for three years and they still look good but I drag about 4 to 5 times a year

Thanks for the advise. I was already running with the TCS off but not the overdrive since I was running on a 1/8 mile track. Going down to the Texas Motorplex this evening for their "Fast Friday" so I will get a chance to see what she does on a full quarter mile. As far as street tires go do you deflate them and if so how much?
No don't deflate them. Make sure the fronts are full. Do a good clean off burn out but don't drive through the water box. TCS off and OD off everytime. With your current HP setup traction is gonna be iffy at times. When my car was at that HP with street tires sometimes it held others it did not. Some sort of race tire is a must for consistant and your best times. It's the best investment you can make for the track. The cheapest route is to take stock rims and throw some DR's on them. Traction will never be an issue again. Your 1320 times should be in the 13.3/13.2 range depending on the DA. Buy tires first. All those other parts won't help without tires. LCA get rid of wheel hop. My auto never had wheel hop. Good luck and have fun.
A friend graciously loaned me a pair of MT P305/35R 18 ET DR’s and I used them last night. Ran a 13.65 @101mph in drive. That’s three tenths better than my best time on the Goodrich’s. Backed that up with a 13.75 @101mph and a 13.77 @101mph. So I think we all know what just went to the top of my Christmas wish list. Any suggestions on the best place to get a pair?
Thanks for the good advice.
Question to 808muscle: Do you race at the Maui Raceway north of Kihei?

Yes I do......every race they put on I'm there. I run Pro Street 12.90 class. Brenspeed wrote me a detuned version of my DD tune to slow down for my index. I'm able to go in and change the timing to slow down or speed it up too......very cool. Yes I'm a drag racing addict. LOL
Your best bet is to order some 17x10 wheels off americanmuscle and get some MT 295/45/17 Drag radials. Its the perfect size height wise for our cars. I'm very happy with mine. If you let your car cool down all the way your times will be 2-3 tenths faster.
Have you been to our track before? You obviously know the area. This was our July 20th race. Had a great night.

I have never been to the track but I have flown over it a lot. I fly into Kahului from time to time and usually coming in from the NE we come around the north side of Haleakala then south across the valley towards Kihei make a right turn back and land to the north. That takes us right over the drag strip which makes a good visual reference for turning back to the field without getting too close to the West Maui Mountains.
As far as tires/wheels go my 07, because it is a California Special came with 18 inch tires and the 305/35R’s seemed to hook up nicely. Changing the tire diameter should effectively change the rear end ratio I just need to figure out whether I need to go up (19-20) or down (16-15). I really like the Roush wheels that Brenspeed sells but they are over $400 each. American Muscle sells a chrome knockoff of the 2010 factory GT wheel that is under $200 so that is probably where I will go.
I tried to open the pics but the forum website won’t allow for some reason but I will watch the Maui Raceway website and the next time I am there and you guys are running I will try to get up there and check the track out.
