Best Exhaust Combination to go with a Catted X Pipe
I am very much interested in getting rid of my bone stock exhaust set up on my 06 GT. I am looking at doing headers, mid pipe, and some sort of axle back. I live in Northern Virginia so the mid pipe needs to be catted for emissions. When looking around online for sound clips, everything is 95% of the time an off road pipe. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a catless V8 pony like everyone else, it's just not practical for me. I was leaning towards getting an X pipe over Y but would love to hear others thoughts. My main go to axle was going to be the Borla Ataks. I would also love others opinions.
I went with Pypes axle back muffler delete and it sounds just right, not raspy and no crackling, quite on the highway and loud when you get in it. 07 GT premium vert. The cats are still in place, mid pipes are stock. The neighbors know when I come home though.
I have Kooks Longtube Headers with the catted H-pipe married to Mac axle backs. Man, it sounds great with my Brenspeed detriot rocker cams however if I had a different axleback I would be happier. The axleback is great if you don't have the long tubes but geez with them it is pretty loud. This video doesn't really depict how loud it is.

You can't go wrong with Kook's, top-notch quality that is built to last. We would recommend the 1 5/8 in. primary long tubes KOK-11312000. Then you could go with their 2 1/2 in. catted X-pipe KOK-11313200.Or you could go with the 2 1/2 in. catted H-pipe KOK-11313500.
For the axle-back exhaust, we offer quite a few brands and series. The one that is most liked by our customers is the Flowmaster Outlaw Series FLO-817511. You can search on Google "Flowmaster Outlaw axle-back exhaust on 05-09 Mustang GT" to hear sound clips. There are many other popular brands and series out there. Just input a different brand and series in front of axle-back to find other videos. Look for videos that are using a stock Mustang with just the axle back. This way you will be able to get a good idea of what yours would sound like. You will be louder than stock due to the long tubes and aftermarket mid-pipe but the cats will help tame it down.
No matter the long tubes, mid-pipe, or axle-back you go with, the engine will benefit from the performance gain. It will be music to your ears and put a smile on your face.
