Default Tapping sound

Hello, I’m new to the forum, I have a 2010 Mustang GT. I had the clanking cam phaser noise and before I changed it, I started getting a slight tapping noise around 1500rpms and up. I thought this was linked to the timing so I went ahead and changed the entire timing set with Motorcraft parts. The camphaser on the drivers side fell apart into 3 pieces when I removed it. After install, the car ran better than when I bought it. I purchased the car 1 1/2 years ago with 155,000 miles on it, it now has 175,000 on it. Ok, the sound was still there. Ut very faint and then it went away for a while. After about 1500 miles it came back and keeps getting louder. There’s no noise at idle only from 1,500 rpm’s and greater. It seems to come from the passenger side so I removed the valve cover and the roller followers seemed fine but a couple had a little movement. I took it to a shop and they said it was my roller followers, then they said it was my lash adjusters. They replaced them and the tapping didn’t go way and they said it was piston slap. I wanted to see what you guys think? I need it fixed and it’s singing like a type writer. Still no noise at idle but it does get worse as the engine warms up. Thanks for any help.

I’m sorry, the sounds seems to come from the back of the passenger side valve cover.

Did the guys at the shop replace ALL of the cam followers & lash adjusters or only the ones that had excessive movement? If it's the latter, you'll need to replace the rest.

They replaced all of the ones on the passenger side, where the noise is coming from, and that’s it. They then started the engine and noticed the noise was still there and stopped. The noise is still coming from the passenger side. I forgot to mention, they showed me photos of some scoring on the cam journals.

You're going to need a replacement cylinder head. Cam journal scoring occurs either when there's oil starvation or when there are fine metal particles in the oil.

I was thinking that as well but where is the tapping coming from? They replaced the roller followers and lash adjusters on that side of the engine, what’s causing the tapping?

Probably the excessive clearances in the cam journals.

Where can I get one from? I was looking for a completely new stock crate motor and can’t find any.

My only other question is, I saw one video of a coyote with the same symptoms that my car has and the same sound, his problem was the imrcs were rattling, is that a thing with the 4.6? I let my car warm to operating temp, and cut it off. I let it sit for about 10 mins, when I crank it up, I can rev it to 2500 3 times without any noise and then the noise will come back. I replaced the spark plugs and coil packs to make sure they weren’t broken or cracked. I also ran the car without the belt to make sure it wasn’t a pulley.

It's quite possible that a rivet holding one of the CMCV butterflies has broken, causing the butterfly to rattle inside the intake runner. The only way to find out for sure is to remove the intake manifold.
