Default question for 4.10 guys and knowledgeable people only please.

hi im looking to put 4.10 gears in my 5-speed gt,

but i was wondering how it works

do i only gain on low end pulling power and what happens to the pulling power in the high end.
50-80mph 80-100mph 100- whatever?

i know the car will lose top speed instead of 147 it would end up lower somewhat any info .. but my consern is say my new top speed would be 137 for example..

would the pulling power be lost as i go faster?
thanks alot in advance [sm=icon_rock.gif]

I must say i wonder some of the same... I have heard the the 4.10's in the 2005 will give u amazing pulling power low end but some 100+ mph power is gone... I want to go 3.90's but Ford doesnt make them and i heard the Motives/ Richmonds whine on occasion. I think i may be going 3.73's since car is a daily driver.. unless someone tells me 4.10's are great and still pull like a rapped ape on the highway... Every post i have seen about 4.10's says that they are great low end and blah blah blah... what about mid-range to upper mph power... thanks

!@$% I had 5 minutes of typing disappear beacause the power flickered. I hate that!

I got the 4.10's because I wanted to improve acceleration. Your car will run through the MPH gauge quicker everywhere with shorter gears. The reason is because of the shape of the Mustangs power curve. We are allowing the engine to operate longer in the meatiest part of the power curve by getting a shorter (numerically higher) gear ratio. Ideally, I would want to use all 5 gears in the quarter mile and go through the trap at 6200 RPM in fifth gear. This would allow the motor to run between 5200 - 6200 RPM for the entire run and stay within 5 horsepower of it's maximum for the entire run. Just like what the Pro Stock guys do. You ever see them pull the lightning rods, one after another as soon as they leave the line? There running through the gears keeping the motor at max horsepower all the tme. With a taller gear, it takes longer to get to an RPM where max horsepower is being generated thus, slowing you down. If you had a motor that made max HP at 3500 RPM, shorter gears wouldn't help and could hurt all but off the line performance.

Lastly, the shorter gear gives more leverage to leave the line. This is the same effect as pedalling your bicycle from a start in 10th gear instead of 1st. This gain in leverage only effects your launch.

This thread should ster up some coments.

In theory, you wouldnt want to use all 5 gears and end up at 6200 rpm in 5th gear at the line...remember 5th is overdrive (.68). You want to end up in whatever gear is your 1:1 gear (normally 4th) at 6200rpm at the line. Thats how I did it in my 91 LX coupe with 4.10 gears.....at the finish line, approx. 6000 rpm, 4th gear, 110mph.

yeah i need new gears right at the end of the 1/4 i have to switch to 4th and that takes some time off, with new gears ill be quicker and the switch to 4th wont be a waste

The pulling power out of the hole is much improved because of the much lower gear, each gear responds faster as well. Top end is reduced simply because you run out of gear faster. But you get there much faster Simple math and some common sense tells you why you will launch harder and lose top speed. For me 3.73's are better for a car that's driven on a daily basis, a good all around gear.

Freako. How did you come to the conclusion that you don't want to use 5th gear because "remember it's overdrive"?

The higher gear ratio is essentially a torque multiplier. Think of a winch. That puppy probably turns its engine 50 times to do a quarter of a turn on the actual winch. Also, I'm attaching a spreadsheet I utilized with my S2000 when changing gears that show the different RPM's and Speeds.

Here is the math behind it all...

Couldn't get the lay out correct so I put it in an image.
