Default High idle with clutch pushed all the way

I have a 87 4 cylinder manual trans and when I start the car it idles at 3 to 3.5 if I let the clutch out slowly while holding the brake the rpm goes lower the more I let it out. When I am driving as I downshift to stop the idle starts going up again. Has anyone had this issue or know how to fix it?

Hi,

It could be a vacuum leak. Start by checking hoses as well as any suspect gaskets around the intake. Id also check the throttle plate for carbon buildup as well as looking at the IACV then resetting your base idle and go from there.

Hope this helps.

Thumbs up

It was a vacuum leak on the intake and the valve cover. Thanks for the help.
