Default 86 broke down on the road half an hour after I bought it...

The symptoms are pretty much as follows: The car was driving along fine and then I could smell gas, at that point the car died. Upon getting it off the road I found that, turn the key all I liked, nothing would happen. No click, no starter engaging, nothing. Attempting to jump it off proved futile. I was able to make it turn over by running a hot wire from battery post to the post on the solenoid. So this leads me to believe that there's an electrical issue between the key and the battery. Possibly a neutral safety switch? I'm new to this car, and don't know where to find said switch in order to check it.

As for why it died in the first place I think I might have flooded the single barrel carburetor. That was the only thing I could think of. Any ideas?
