Default 5.0 Optimal Temperature?

My thermostat housing looks like crap compared to the rest on my engine. So I got my JEGS catalog out to find a shiny chromeone. And while I was at it was going to order a new thermostat too since they are cheap. They offer a 160 degree and a 180 degree thermo. Which one should I get and whats the logic behind finding you optimal running temp?

My temperature gauge stays one line below the halfway mark constantly when it is warm, makes me want to beleive that I'm running a 160 degree thermostat. If this is true I am having no problems what so ever with it and the car runs fine, many would suggest using a 180 degree though. I wouldn't know though the only thermostat that I know for sure that I've ran is a 193-195 degree one and that was in the vert for the winter.

i would run a 180 bec some of the sensors are only engaged when the coolent temp reaches there. like the egr and stuff.

My temp stays below tha halfway line ALWAYS I m pretty sure it is a stock thermostat as the guy that sold me it said everything was stock except the rims. He has been right so far, does everyone have the same temp as me? If it was stock would a 180 deg. temp help ay, or would it be a waste of money?

some say it helps some say it doesnt. go with a 180, they are no more money than a stock one.

I have a 160 in my car and have no problems. But I also have a Hypertech chip on the ecu and it said when I installed it that I need a 160 degree thermostat in order for it to work properly.
