Default installed tach, which one is closer to being correct rpm?

i just installed a monster tach and it works great. just for example, when im idling the cluster tach says im at ~600rpm but the autometer is at 1000rpm, but i know an aftermarket meter should be more accurate but this is kind of strange...

the great autometer[:'(] can be off see it several times and is why I don't buy them...but to answer you question I'm sure that factory tach is a off as I haven't seen to many 5.0's idle @ 600...if you bought that tach new send it back to be calibrated

check your calibration on the monster tach, no stang should idle at 1000

My 331 idles at 500-550 you must not have seen many 5.0's?

The stock ford gauges are off as well.Right now i have a sunpro tach and its dead on.That seems a little odd your aftermarket tach is wack!lol

Take it back and get another and see if thats it.

Mine used to idles around 600-650. Since you just put in the new tach I wouldn't trust it as much, plus you should be able to hear the difference between 600 and 1000 without a problem. The alternator output should go up between those two also so you can always check that.

well i showed one of my dads buddies, who is the only one who drives a fox mustang out of a group of chevelles and novas, and he said it felt like it was idling at 1000. i reset the eec(unplugged neg batt.), unplugged the IAB, set the tps to .98 and reset the idle based on the new tach visual....its idling at 700 right now and it just feels right, and yes the alternator output rises when i rev to 1000...

Sounds good, so you think your stock tach was off? Also how do you like your CAI and Pro 5.0'?

i assume it was ~200-300 low, the CAI added a little kick when i got it, and i would love the shifter A LOT more if my tranny wasnt in the shape its in...

Cool, I'd like to get an induction system, but I should probably hold off right now, I might be going with a turbo. One of my friends has a T3 he might give me real cheap. I'll have to wait and see what happens with that.
