Not sure if I would go quite that far but you may see some noticable difference in acceleration!

From what i've learned on here, If you advance to much you will Ping. So for instance if you go to 14* time, You might hear a pinging. In that case its to much, Or you just need to run a higher octane like 93. I'd set the timing for 12* because I think 10* is stock. Hope This helps.

bah..it depends on motor/set-up...i'm running 18*...no problems......carbon build up plays with how much timing you can get away with.

^^ yea because i was going to say i ran 16 base with 5 degrees in cam so thats 21 all togeather, and it never pinged but my rpms hung up like a ****, so i knocked it down to 14 and so far its good.

Setting your base timing gives the eec a starting point to add to or take away from under different conditions dictated by your different engine sensor inputs. How much base advance you can safely set in depends alot on you engine combo and which octane fuel you run. Most can get away with 12, beyond that it depends a great deal on your engine, driving style and even where you live and the weather there....if you get deep into the details. Most play with it until they hear a "pinging" noise when they drive under load (heavy acceleration). This is detonation and left unchecked can be very destructive.

Back to your original question though setting your base timing is not like getting a chip, no matter what you set it to, it just changes the starting point for your eec so it is a straight-line change across the entire timing curve. A chip changes the table in whifch your eec adds or subtracts and is different throughout the curve and set to match driving conditions (from sensor inputs).

I'm really interested in adjusting my timing. What tools do I need to go about doing this? Also, what do I need to do?
Those 2 questions have been bugging me.

My neighbor is a mechanic, but Im sure he won't let me borrow his timing light for a few hours. I have a nice warehouse area in my neighborhood where I can do my test-and-tuning, just so long as cops don't come.
