RE: Power steering pump installation
you will need a power steering pump pulley remover, which you can rent at any parts place, make sure its the right remover, it locks onto the center of the pulley. Other than that its pretty straight forward

Check the hoses if it's leaking, the unit probably isn't leaking itself. Usually when a pump goes it starts to grind and make lots of noise, and just stop working all together.
To replace the pump, it's straight forward, 2 hoses, 5 bolts, and the pulley. Probably the whole operation takes about 30-45minutes.

thanks a lot im going to check the hoses for wear before i do anything, it would suck to replace the unit for 100 dollars when i 7 dollar hose could be the culprit

swapping a pump is real easy, I have done it many times on many cars...DO NOT put a new pulley on too far, the belts will not line up, the lip needs to be even with the end of the shaft.
just to be geeky, I painted my 86's power steering pump the concours correct color for a 65-66 pump...

One quick Q. Is it normal for the first few hundred miles for the PS pump to be VERY loud right?

RE: Power steering pump installation
What I am saying is... basically I baught a PS pump from autozone (remann) and when I installed it; it was very loud... I was told that this was normal for some type of break in period. It even said it on the directions that came with it. I was just wondering if there was any logic behind it
