Default Ring and pinion help, please!

I am putting in a new 3.73 ring and pinion from Ford racing, replacing 2.73. I had the bearing pulled, put on the new pinion, and had the factory shim replaced under the bearing. When I went to tighten the pinion nut, it would not bottom out on the new crush sleeve, so there was .070" endplay. No problem, I measured out .075" of shims and had them pull the bearing and add the shims. Endplay gone, but when I put the new carrier with ring gear, there was zero backlash. Like probably negative. Now the carrier asssy won't come out. With the old gears I removed it by pounding on the snout of the old pinion. So my question is, how to get out the carrier ASSY without pounding the NEW pinion snout? I've been trying to pry it out to no avail.

This is why it's a good idea to get a pinion depth checker when doing your own gears to do it the first time and only one time to have to press.

It's hard to know what to do without being there, wish I could.

Get a mechanic that knows how to do it, to do it. Very few mechanics actually know how to do rear-ends, so let alone the average-joe. There's a lot more to it than just popping the crown gear off and pulling the pinion out and then slamming the new ones on and putting it all together. I've seen it done, my father is one of the few people in this city that know how to do it, it's complicated as hell. You have to shim it properly so the teeth mate properly.

To take it out, jam a cro-bar or pry-bar of some sort, behind the carrier and pry it out on the housing.

Doing rear gears is not that hard. An average joe can do it as long as he has and idea of how it works. When you were tightning the nut did you get the crush sleave crushed? it takes like 150ft lb+ to crush it.

Not to make you sounds stupid but are the bearing caps off? if so put gloves on grab ahold of the ring gear and pull and wiggle it. they are tight but it will come out. it sounds like you have to many shims on the carrier.
