Default t5 trans. Install troubles....new bearing retainer

I put in a new clutch (91 GT) and a new rear main seal, and thought while the tranny was out, that I would put on a new STEEL bearing retainer as opposed to the ford cast aluminum junk....It was a VERY tight fit for the bearing race and then the retainer wouldnt go onto the input shaft all the way. I had to break out the dremel and knock a tiny bit of metal off of the outside of the lip that insets into the front of the trans case....Finally got the retainer in all the way, and the input shaft rotates freely (after quite a gigantic headache---bearing race wasnt seated COMPLETELY...it was off by a hair) So, I went to bolt the trans back up to the bellhousing and it wont go all the way in...It goes in very nicely untill the last 1/4 inch...then its not going....I suspect its the damn bearing retainer again, although I checked it and it does go in on its own.....It wont go in while bolted to the trans. What can I do? Has anyone else had this problem with aftermarket bearing retainers?

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
