Default GT40 Question

OK, I'm not really new to Mustangs, but I just recently bought a '90 and did a few mods to it. I had a '95 5.0 before, but never really modded it. I'm more into LS1s and LT1s.

On to my question... I was at a car show the other night, and there was a fox body vert with a "built GT40", 5spd, MT ET Streets, and a 150 shot. I asked him what he was running 1/4 mile time, and he said 13.3 w/o spray..

Now that can't be normal for a "built" GT40, right? What kind of times are people putting down with "built" GT40s? Now I know it depends on what he meant by built, but just some base numbers.

It depends what you mean by "built GT40." It would be harder to do since it's a vert (heavier), but ford sells GT40 long blocks that could probably pull that off. It's very possible. You'd be better off w/ the Trickflow topend kit--newer technology and makes more power.

Well I would expect a "built" GT40 to be faster than low 13s.

I know it all depends on what he means by built, but I'm trying to figure out if he's even in the ballpark...

To me, a true built motor would be balanced & blueprinted w/ forged internals. That alone wouldn't put you in the 12's, but it would make a helluva base to build on. Like I said though, there are better parts out there now than the GT40 stuff. Especially as far as the heads go...AFR 165's or 185's and Twisted wegde's would blow the FRPP X's away.

Well, you never know if he even knew what he was talking about...he could have meant that someone, at somepoint, built the motor.

BTW, what are you putting to the ground on your SS?

are you sure the guy didn't mean just gt40 heads? cuz that does seem like a really high number to me. i know if you do your combo right you can run high 12s with ported e7, ecam and such.

that's what I'm shooting for, but we'll see!! I'm going the low budget route for now just to get the rebuild done, then I'll upgrade. Exploder upper, true GT40 lower, E cam, 1.72's, home-ported E7's w/ crane valve spring kit.

Default RE: GT40 Question

i think i can answer this, since i have a 90 vert with a full gt40 treatment, x heads intake blah blah blah, i ran a best of 13.2 on drag radials, i avg 13.3-13.5, now i installed an strim with 42# inj. and i ran a best of 11.90, i have 3.73 rear, and put down a best of 412 rwhp on 8lbs of boost, so anyway yes, his times are right on, alot of people say they are faster but those are people that race so and so who said they ran this time so they must be faster, i think alot of people dont realise how fast low 13's are till they actually get to the track, think about this an 03 cobra that puts about 420-450 rwp is doing mid 12's, so a mid 13 for a n/a 5liter vert is pretty fast!!
