I heard you were supposed to wait til you finished modding your car, then get a custom chip burned to suit your car perfectly.
But, I also know very little about anything... i'm just going off of what I heard from another post

Yeah have heard the same thing, mods then chip.. i have also heard people say that there are 2 types of chips..one kind that are custom burnt (Superchips etc.) and others that a preset for performance. I dunno, just thought that maybe there was somethhing that i was missing but i was just curious as to the "preset performance" chips. Maybe i had smoke blown up where the sun doesnt shine on that one though..

Well if you buy an off-the-shelf chip it's not going to be tailored to your specific combo. It'll bump the timing up a little, but it's not going to maximize your specific combo. Better to do a Tweecer or the like and tune it yourself, or find somebody who can tune it.

I installed a Hypertech chip on my 88 AOD 10 years ago and I found it did add some seat of the pants get up and go, especially at wide open throttle. It also helped at normal cruising speeds on the street too. A chip will help some since the factory tune-up is based on minimum emissions and maximum gas mileage. Aftermarket chips are aimed more at maximum performance and don't usually concern themselves too much with the emissions and mileage part. About $230 and a couple of hours of sweat equity on your part will pay you back in smiles.[sm=lol.gif][sm=smiley20.gif]

I purchased a Superchip for my 4.6l GM after putting Ford Motorsport SS headers, flow tubes and Borla SSCat Back, underdrive pulleys, CAI, 3.55 posi, and Bosch Platinum+4 plugs, The difference was unexplainable, AWESOME!!! I have yet to take it to the track but we timed three runs with and without the chip by hand on a known 1/4 mile piece of road,..unbelieveably the 4400lb. car ran consistant 15.5's Without the chip, and 14.9's with it. I was told that that was like removing 5-600lbs from a car. I know the times are impressive as a Stang but it sure does get their attention when I hang with them.

All this is gr8 to know.. thanks guys. So a Tweecer and a chip are extras that can be added for tuning a stang? How difficult are teh Tweecers to install and about how much price wise are we talking? Out here in Cali, them damn emmisions laws keep guys like me from doing all the things i would like to for fear of having to rip it all out once everyother year just to pass smog. I know im for sure gunna get some 3.55's or 3.73's (leaning toward 3.55 because of highway driving) possibly a Holley Systemax 2, and if not that just a nice set of heads (AFR165 PN1472) and some 1.6 roller rockers along w/ a Summit Rebuild kit w/ forged pistons and my block honed and cleaned or just fresh short block. maybe an e303 cam and a TrickFlow or Edelbrock intake MAF if i dont get that System Max 2 kit which produces 350hp 350trq with some other minor accessories. Then a chip or tweecer if i can find a good speed shop in my area. I havnet had any luck w/ that yet.

tweecer is 300, tweecer rt (rt meaning real time data logging) is 550. with the tweecer you will need access to a laptop. you can install it yourself, but you will need it profesionally tuned on a dyno. you can get a pms, which will cost you about 1000, but its alot more user friendly and has more options. the pms runs stand alone after 3500 rpms. you can get a mafterburner also, which is 300, but I dont recomend that. if you really want to get serious, you could upgrade to a f.a.s.t. or aem engine management system.
