if you have any plans to run your car on a strip, the battery will have to be located in an approved battery box with a minimum of two, 3/8" diameter hold down rods that are bolted through the bottom of the box to the floorpan. these kits are available from Summit Racing and Jegs Mail Order. you will also have to have an exterior mounted battery cut-off switch clearly labeled on/off on the back of the car properly connected to the battery to allow someone outside the car to shut off the electrical system in case of an emergency. if not on a track, go to the hardware store and buy some 3/8" all thread rod and some nuts, washers and lockwashers along with a piece of 1/4" thick x 1" wide metal plate. drill holes in the ends of the plate wide enough apart to accomodate the width of the battery and both rods and drill matching holes in the floorpan for the rods to run through. make sure you position the battery where the rods don't require you to drill holes in the gas tank!!!!
put a nut with washers and lockwashers on both sides of the floorpan and tighten them down good. then place the battery between the two rods, add the cross over plate to the rods and tighten down the nuts securely. this will hold the battery firmly in place.
personally, I highly recommend the battery box method especially if you still put stuff in the back of car. the box protects the battery terminals from short circuits and it vents the explosive hydrogen gas generated by the battery outside the interior of the car. don't just leave the battery loose in the back, you could get hurt! suppose you had to make a panic stop, how would you like the battery to hit you in the back of your head?

Plus remember if you're drilling through the floorpan you need to seal it with something so you don't get leaks. I'd look for something that's corrosive resistent in case it might come in contact with anything from the battery.
