Default Any hope for an Automatic?

I am still a noob here ... but I have an Automatic 95 GT vert ... is there any hope of making it fast? Are autos totally taboo?
As of now, it is totally stock, besides the wheels, and I think I may have a catback on it.....
Where should I begin?
