I don't know about cars in particular, but on bikes, if it's only knocking at idle, and the knocking doesn't speed up with rpms, it's probably not spun crank bearings or a busted rod. Even though it's knocking, how is the idle quality? I've heard slight knocking sounds on engines that aren't firing all of their god-given cylinders. Hopefully your knocking isn't bad news.

even an exhaust leak at the header will make a knocking type noise.

With all due respect: How will that fix the knock?
