my monte carlo was carb'd thing would start out at like 2000rpm's and kickdown to like 1400rpm's and finaly hit idle 800 rpm's

yeah carb'd engines are the one you want to let warm up, and for that reason exactly. Ikey mine does the same as yours. when it settles down is when i go..1 - 2 mniutes if that

Since were on the subject of temperature. what is the normal operating temp of the 5.0 engine and an automatic trans? My car runs at about 210 for both and i want to know if thats hot or not.

humm me mine will run 10min on the first start of the day or untill its 180. if i go to work and like 8 hours later i will let it run for 5min or about 140-160 on the gauge. FYI if u get in your car and go your seals will leak like a SOB because the seals are cold and the oil pressure is high. if its like 70 out or better i say ur ok as long as you dont go super hard.

That sounds a little hot to me. They should be around 190 give or take 5*.

Let it run for a minute or two while I get myself situated in it then I drive real slow to work/school. Or until warmed up.
