pilot bearing question
so i have the famous "chirp" comming from my pilot/throw out bearing. its real annoying, but its a pain to change, dropping the trans. ect..
my question is, how many miles can i drive until it goes out? it kno its only like a $10 part, but i really dont have the time/experience/money to do this just yet.
thanks

RE: pilot bearing question
Probably don't want to drive around with it bad for too long. Remember, this does support and front of your transmission shaft. If you let if wobble for too long you could possibly damage the input shaft inside the transmission.

RE: pilot bearing question
I guess it all depends on how badly the pilot bearing fails. Mine basically completely fell apart (rollers separted from the main assembly), allowed the front shaft to wobble, then the tranny exploded.

RE: pilot bearing question
Imagine, driving down the road at about 80mph, all of sudden the car starts vibrating followed by the shifter falling out the bottom of the car. As you look in your rearview mirror you see pieces of transmission casing, gears and other parts bouncing down the highway. Luckily no other cars were hit by the junk that I had just littered the highway with. Mind you that this was on an older classic car, I am sure that they have improved the durability of these transmission. If you drove around for 2 years without any incident, I guess there really isn't an issue with driving with a bad pilot bearing.
