Default Able to hear fuel pump while driving

Is it normal to be able to hear your fuel pump while you're driving? Lately I've noticed I can hear mine and I don't know if it's been like that all along and I'm just now noticing it or if it just started doing it recently. The reason I think it's my fuel pump is because the sound is coming from the back of the car and a mechanic friend of mine heard it and says thats what it is and that it's not a big deal.

Yeah, it is. I just went out and checked and when I turn the key forward it does it for about 2 seconds and then stops.
