Default Cruise control surges.

I just tried to use my cruise control yesterday for the first time. When applied, it makes the car accelerate irratically--almost as though some old man on the floor of the back seat were poking his cane under my seat, and dicking with the gas pedal. Any ideas what would cause this?

Speed sensor is notorious for causing that too.

Thanks for the replies folks. Where would a leak have to be, on the intake, to cause the cruise control to malfunction?
