Default 5.0 power

Hey. I've always been a Chevy guy, but I am now switching to Blue Oval power. I have a '79 stang, formerly with SBC power. It was a 355, 14:1, .634/.645 roller, 530hp, etc. I just got a low-mile '88 Lincoln cheap, and I am going to put the 5.0 in the Mustang. I'm just going to clean it up, drop it in, and start bolting stuff on. I'm new to Ford power, so I need help to get started. Funds are limited, and I'm going to do it as I have cash. That means no aftermarket cyl. heads or supercharger, for the time being. It is drag only. Where do I start and which parts do you guys suggest, and in what order? Cam? A shot of N2O is probably my best bang for the buck right off the bat?

thats an ok engine, but you could make alot more power with a big block or even a 351. if you can, find one of those in a junkyard. otherwise your gonna have alot of trouble making that 302 run anywhere near your old 355 N/A, and even with spray your going to spend a bundle on a bottom end that will hold up to nitrous well.

Thanks TL, but funds are very limited right now. The SBC had to be sold, and the 5.0 is just a way to get back to the track. I got the whole Lincoln for a case of beer(seriously) because it was sideswiped, so I don't care how long the 5.0 lasts. I'm not going to put a lot of $$$ in it, but would put some bolt-on stuff and maybe a cam to help a little until a good motor could be built. The car's just sitting there collecting cobwebs, and I miss the track.

haha yea.....well ebay would be your best friend on a budget build. alot of off the shelf cams would work well with the stock cam and you can get headers on ebay for cheap. go to the junkyard if you can and find a wrecked stang, you could get quite a start with that. ive seen junkyard motor cars running low 13's with stock unported heads, and thats with handling suspension. you could probably get mid 12's out of your car with the right tuning. i wish you luck

So you already baught the 302 motor? If so than it would be fine to use that BUT if you did not buy it already I wouldnt even waste my time with it and I would just go get a 351W for close to the same price.

If funds are super tight, find yourself a nice set of 351W heads, preferrably 69-70 castings, I believe the casting numbers will start with C9 for the 69's and D0 for the 70's. Then a single plane 4 bbl intake, a 650 dbl pump, a B303 (496-510 lift, 280-290 dur.) cam, some shorty headers, and a 120 shot, you might hit high 11's. When you got er out of the licoln might as well rering it, thatll help a lil bit too. Just my .02.

If your just wanting it as a drag car I would suggest a 351 or at least an HO engine. But after that I would stick to suspension. These cars will get on down the road in a hury with the right suspension. I know there is a guy here running 12.8 or so on the stock engine that runs 225hp. Just my input, Im sure suspension isnt cheap but it works!
