Default overheating then runs fine

I drove my car about 5 miles and the temp guage just shot to hot, but right below the redline. I pulled over and took the radiator cap off and it lost some water. I kept filling it with water while it was running until it wouldnt take anymore. After I did this it ran fine...not hot at all. Does this sound like a faulty thermostat? Like it is sticking then when it opens it sucks the water and the motors already so hot the water burns up? Should I get a cooler thermo?

well, prolly not, but its such an easy check. if its going bad, and you unplug it, the fan will kick on. but if youre losing water, you may have a leak somewhere, any smell of antifreeze or signs of leaking?

No signs of external leaking. I let it run today until the thermostat opened and then drove it instead of just jumping right in it and it ran fine.
