Default quick question about rear-end gears

I just got my first 5.0. It's an '88 hatchback and I was trying to read the tag on the differential but could only see 73 8 8 I'm assuming the 8 8 means it's an 8.8 inch rearend but do you think those are 2.73 or 3.73s? I'm only 17 and don't know a whole lot about cars.

2.73s. if your getting aftermarket gears, get 3.73s for a 5 speed, or 4.10s for a auto. you will be very happy with your purchase.

You have to look at the code letter to tell what size gears you have in there now. The 3.55's are a nice all around gear but now low enough IMO, I would go w/ 3.73's at the minimum.

i like 4.10's in a 5-speed even

look in the door tag under "ax" code

m=2.73
z=3.08
e=3.27

I think the gear ratio depends all on what you want you car set up to be. The 355 and 373 are very good all around gears. The 390 and 410's are great for street but have a low top end. I got 373 on a 5 speed and work good on street and highway.
