cold start problems

i recently converted my 93 4cyl to 5.0 it runs alright when u get it started (a little black smoke). i have to spray ether in it to start it wtf! can anyone help me here? i do have a check engine light but my crappy obd1 reader wont pick anything up. anyone have any ideas
