Better to mod or buy a modded car?

Better to mod or buy a modded car?
I have a mostly stock 88 GT. The body is in half decent shape, with a small dent here and there, and a few small rust bubbles. I want to one day modify it with a motor, tranny and rear. However, the prices of these things have an effect on my bowels. Is it smarter to buy a car that someone has already modded than to spend the 7-8 grand necessary to make my car over?
As a related question, one can't just install a crate motor, can one? Wouldn't it become necessary to replace the tranny, rear, clutch, radiator, and a host of other things? Thanks.

it may be cheaper to get one that is already modded, and yes you can just put in a motor.
if I was to do my car again, I would do the suspension first, then strengthen the frame and torque boxes and then add more power.

If you have the paiteince to mod it yourself, you will like it more, because it's exactly what you want. I know from expirience, that it sucks when you have to wait week after week for new parts to come in from Jegs, or Summit. If you buy one already modded up, hopfully your not getting somebody else's problems... Just my 2 cents
