Default AOD problems in a 91 GT

I need some help with my wifes 91. The tranny will not engage into 3rd and/or 4th. I have tried going from Overdrive to Drive down to Low and every combanation possible. When you get up to about 50 mph (when you really notice that it needs to shift) and let off of the gas it will go into almost a neutral, then when you accelerate back up the the RPM that the gear is cruising in it will kick back in to 2nd gear.

I have been told to check vacuum lines and such but i am not familiar with the Automatic transmissions.

Can any one please help me??????

Well I have a 90 gt AOD and have been through several trannnys. When it comes to an AOD tranny the problem you are having can be many different things. No one can diagnose a tranny without actually opening it up and seeing what going on inside. So, the best route is the process of elmination. Go with the less expensive possiblities like the vacuum lines, fluid and filter change. Most tranny shops are going to tell you immediately that it needs to be rebuilt. Thats where the money is! Sometimes that is the case, but sometimes it isnt. Thats why it makes since to try the less expensive things out first. If you arent concerned about money then you can simply allow them to open up the tranny and get right to the bottom of it. The cheapest price that I have encountered with a rebuild on a stang tranny was $1000. I wasnt satisfied with my first rebuild so when that tranny went out on me some years down the line I decided to purchased a remanufactured tranny that comes with a 2 to 3 year warranty. The difference between a rebuilt and remanufactured is simply.....rebuilt replaces the worn out parts only and a remanufactured uses all new parts (or at least that is what they tell you). I paid a bit more for the remanuf tranny ($1300) and a shop charge me $250 to install. Another possiblity to your problem could be a failing torque converter on your tranny. Most shops can perform a stall check on the TC, but Im not sure of the cost. Well hope this helps a little. Good Luck!

I know that the O/D in the AOD Fox bodies is prone to failure.

First tings first, have you checked the fluid level? The car needs to be running in order to check it. What color is the fluid? If its anything other than bright red it needs to be changed. I have a 93 ranger with a 5.0/AOD combo, and I found when it switches into the wrong gear at the wrong time, its usually low on fluid. Also, proper throttle valve adjustment is crucial, the TV cable is basically the same thing as a kickdown cable. Couple of things that came to mind.

this is absolutely a worn od band.

but since it's worn, the drum it's on will be grooved and scored, and since there is heavy metallic particles the fluid is contaminated and you'll need a new converter.

so you need a rebuild......best upgrade is a t5 swap really, but if you go aod again......get the "a" servo, redline clutches, better od band, oil cooler and a 3000 stall converter.
