help guys
i was driving home and my car cut off...so i pulled over and tried to start it and nothing.....then i realized when i turned the key to run i didnt hear the fuel pump whine like normal...so i checked the fuses and there was a fuse blown so i replaced it and tried to crank and i heard a pop and it blew the fuse again....and it was raining and i had been through a puddle....so does it sound like just a short or is my fuel pump screwed?
First thing to do is look at all the wiring , is it torn, can you see some copper?
If you cannot see any damage to the wire, try this:
Look at the whole wire length that runs the fuel pump. The Electrical and Vacumn troubleshooting manual may help. There are probably many connectors that this wire goes through to get to the fuel pump.
Find the first connector this wire goes through and disconnect this connector. Put a fuse in the fuel pump slot and give it power. Does it pop? If not, this section of wire is good. Leave those connectors apart and then find the second connector that this wire goes through. Disconnect it on both ends. Now take a self powered test light and hook up to 12V. Touch pointer end to 2nd connector. Does it light? You dont want it to.... If it does, the short is in this section of wire. Remove the wire from brackets and hold downs. Inspect it. Shorts usually occur under brackets and hold downs where you cannot see.
Basically, make sure to disconnect a section of wire harness on both ends and test with the test light.
If you dont have time to do this.....remove the fuel pump relay under the drivers seat and replace it. This may be your problem.....
