engine quits sporatically
My '84 gt/302/4bbl with 5 spd has been quitting at odd times. The tach drops to zero even tho' the car is rolling in gear. The problem stopped on a 100 mile trip, and today, it quit 4 times in 2-3 blocks. The car really seems to do it after restarting from sitting. I am thinking it is a heat problem with the electrics. The last time it quit, I wrapped a water soaked rag around the coil, and the car started and ran OK. With the carbureted engine, I don't think there are any OBD codes? Anyone got an idea on what to check besides the coil?

RE: engine quits sporatically
could be vapor lock in the fuel lines going to the carb or you could have got some bad gas with excess water in it which will cause the engine to stop also. water will plug up the small sintered brass filter on the inlet to the carb, so you might want to pull it and see how it runs without it until you get rid of the bad gas then install a new one in place of the old one.

I replaced that filter just to be sure. The car would backfire on restart, so there must be unburned fuel in the manifold. The tach quitting also makes me think it is electronix.I pulled the coil connection, and module connections, and found some corrosion on them. An auto parts store did a test of the module, and it checked OK. I just got in from a 90 trip with it, and it did not skip a beat. This is in the Mojave desert, with the A/
C on to really get the underhood temps up. I will go out pretty soon and try a restart after it has "heat soaked".
