Default torque boxes

how much power and how hard can you launch a factory mustang (drag radial or slicks) before you gotta start worrying about damaging torque boxes,
and whats the best mods to prevent it.
any stories or advice would be cool

Just get some re-enforcment plates from Jegs, tehy're like $24.00 and you just weld them in to the torque boxes. Cheap insurance. Polyurethane bushings are hell on torque boxes. When you upgrade control arms, run a urethane bushing on the rear ends side of the control arm. Run a sperical buhsing on the torque box side, it helps keep the arm from binding more and messin somethin up.

I ran high 11's w/out the torque boxes welded. Launched at 5500-6000 rpm with full slicks and never crack em. Just recently did em cause I'm worried about them cracking

i'd get them regardless...you wouldn't believe the shock load you can put into the rear end.

Its definetly worth it to do them now and now wait until something DOES go wrong... then you will be spending 5x's as much to fix them.

Check out www.wildridesracecars.com

They have good quality stuff there.

forget the plates, just weld up the seams on your torque boxes.

does that just re-enforce the actual torque boxes or does it also support the floor board around it.
is there any chance of cracking or breaking the floor around them?
and is it the uppers or the lowers that damage the easiest

I've broke my drivers side. I started to notice that when i would accelerate in town or on the highway it would pull to one side when i gave it gas. I finally crawled under and saw the box ripped in half and the controll arm hangin. Then i went to one of the local body shops and he welded in some angle iron and said it would be stronger than ever.

Just welding up the seams will help for a little while, but if you take it to the strip regularly, I would get the box reinforcements b/c the stock metal isn't that strong...

Definitly weld up the seams and get the reinforcment plates, you might even want to reinforce the floor on the other side of the torque box. I had a '79 5.0, one day I was racin my buddies stang, I nailed second hard, and the *** end of the car shot over to the right I let off the gas the car *** shot back to the left, my buddy motioned to me that my back tire was hittin the front and the back of the wheel well. I literally ripped the whole damn torque box off of the car, lower control arm still attached to the torque box, I cracked the frame right above the rear axle too. Tried welding it up, but the first time I drove it after that it just ripped right off again. So I stripped the car and sent it off to get crushed. It wouldve cost something like $2500 to repair it, I was 17 at the time so I didnt have the cash to get it repaired. So its just better to get them done BEFORE you break em, even when theyre cracked they make tons of noise, sounds like creaking from the back end.
