pop off the cover around your shifter that way you can unbolt the boot and the whole shifter will be visible and you will see a bolt in the front and one in the back...back out the one towards the front of the car

And you think this may solve my problem? I hope it's that easy.

I saw the pictures another guy posted in the this forum today of his shifter and it looked like it had 4 bolts holding it on.

Either case, how far should I back it out and what is this bolt holding in?

Sound more like a shift stop or a broken spring retainer in your transmission. A syncro only helps line the gear up when you engage, it does nothing to hold the gear in. I would recomend readjusting you shifter stops, and if that doesn't help, you will have to open it up most likely. There is a magnet on the bottom of you tranny, so if you drain your fluid and use a scope, you might be able to look and see if there is anything stuck to it.
I agree. Synchros shouldn't be a factor here....

You may have had an alignment issues or some other problems. Syncros don't hold you in gear. If you syncro is worn, you will have trouble getting it in gear or it may pop out if you don't have it in a ll the way, like a shift stop out of adjustment. But that is on a mustang, not sure on a stealth.

+1 on the synchros not being a problem...If that were the case you would hear/feel grinding between the gears.
