Tranny guys : LOOK HERE
Ok. I've had this problem since I've had my car.
I have an 89 LX 5.0 with a standard T-5. Tranny only has a short throw shifter (not sure what brand - I didn't install).
The problem is that it intermittently pops out of first gear when taking off. 85% of the time it does it when I dump the clutch and alot of times it just does it when taking of normally. It pops out of first gear into neutral, then I put it back into first. This is very annoying. Some days it does it from every stop light and other times I'll get lucky and it'll only happen a few times when I'm out.
Alot of times it pops out very violently and I really can't launch because it kills it. Alot of people are telling me that it's the synchronizer. Any ideas?
I don't believe it's the clutch because it acts fine. IE : No slipping or smoking or weird noises.
Comeon, there's gotta be some good transmission guys here or atleast some dudes with experiences with T-5's.
This has been bugging me forever and I need to get it fixed if I ever want to launch well.
BTW, it only happens in first gear.

RE: Tranny guys : LOOK HERE
Sound more like a shift stop or a broken spring retainer in your transmission. A syncro only helps line the gear up when you engage, it does nothing to hold the gear in. I would recomend readjusting you shifter stops, and if that doesn't help, you will have to open it up most likely. There is a magnet on the bottom of you tranny, so if you drain your fluid and use a scope, you might be able to look and see if there is anything stuck to it.

sounds like the stop screws to me just back them out a little bit and you should be fine, it happend to my friend when he put his b&m ripper...he didnt put the bolts on the other end so they started screwing in and making him pop out of gear i found it to be pretty funny actually
