T 56 or TKO 500/600

RE: T 56 or TKO 500/600
what do you think the costs and items would be needed-----
i really need to get down to making a decision on TKO versus T56---looks like the clutch and other associated parts will be close, but the transmission itself is about 800 more with the T56.
question---is it worth it????

RE: T 56 or TKO 500/600
I just put a TKO 600 in my fox and I love it. It is super quiet with no weird vibrations. I've only got 60 miles on it so it's still stiff, but the shifts are very smooth compared to the T-5 that was in it. I'm anxious to see how well it shifts after 5 or 600 miles. I think it will be just fine. I can do 70 in 5th gear and only turn 2000 rpm's. The gas mileage is great. I got it from D&D for 1700 and with an SFI bell, 26 spline KC disc, Tri-ax shifter handle and ****, and Ford Racing 31 spline driveshaft, it was just under 2500.

RE: T 56 or TKO 500/600
what wheels do you have ? and what motor?
im running american racing with 4.5 backspacing. i have 245 and think i can go to 265 without problems.
i have 225's on the front and get some rubbing on the upper wheel well/housing. i have not shaved anything there and likely wont unless i have a real problem.
likely will get a stiffer sway bar and springs to assist when i get the motor and trans ready to install.

can i ask how much it ran you to put that in? remember i'm replacing a AOD [originally C4].
what can i expect in terms of other costs?

I did the install myself, so it was basically the cost of parts. I originally converted it from AOD to the T-5 and then blew up the T-5. I know for older models like yours you may need a few specialty conversion parts, but they aren't super expensive.
-You'll need a flywheel and good clutch kit with pilot and throwout bearings 250-300
-Maybe a different or modified trans crossmember 50-100
-Bellhousing and clutch fork: I'm using a mcleod SFI approved housing and with the power you will be making I'd go SFI. If you are running longtube headers, you may have clearance issues that require a little modification 250-300
-Pedal Assembly 50
-Trans of course
-Shifter, depending on which trans you get. TKO comes with one dont' know about the T-56 150-200 for a good one.
-Driveshaft: Don't know if the stocker will work, but if not then 250 for a new one
There's a company called keisler or kiesler engineering that might make full conversion kits for your car. They pricey though, so see what comes in their kits and then try and source it cheaper somewhere else.

if you want to feel how a t56 feels shifting, test drive any ls1 car, or a vette, gto, viper.. i've driven many vettes and ihave to say the t56 is probably the smoothest shifting manual ive ever driven. you'll probably even get a little bit better gas milage with a t56 because of the 6th gear, which would be nice for a daily driver.

RE: T 56 or TKO 500/600
Keisler Auto has a 5 speed swap for your mustang. The t-56 will require a lot of modification to the tunnel to acheive the proper driveline angle. The t-56 is rated up to 475 hp the TKO 600 is rated for 650 ft lbs of torque. Keisler uses their own billet shifter. It has a very short throw and smooth shift. The kit includes a crossmember and the shifter in the correct location to use the factory hole. Their kit also has all of the other small pieces you need to do the swap. They leak test and blue print each transmission. The also modify the tail housing. This will get you the proper driveline angle. If you do not have the proper drivleline angle or the bell housing runout correct you will bind up the transmission. This will effect the shifting with the trans. www.keislerauto.com
