Look.... you can have a shop build you a trans to your specifications. Just do the RPM math and find out what you need. If you want to go through the traps at 103mph and you want to be at the top of 4th, then do the math to figure out the best spacing. Then, and only then, buy gears to match that and have the manufacturer or a worthy shop install them.
The t-56 will require a lot of modification to the tunnel to acheive the proper driveline angle. The t-56 is rated up to 475 hp the TKO 600 is rated for 650 ft lbs of torque.
I have been putting 5-speeds and 6-speeds in classic muscle and pony cars for years, 2300+ of them. My company sells complete systems to put them in. My honest opinion is that in most cases the TKO is the better transmission for the job. It is stronger, lighter, smaller and quicker shifting than the T56, especially at higher RPMs. We can provide a TKO that will fit with little or no cutting or modification to the car, will hold up to ridiculous power and will look like a factory 4-speed from inside the car, with a turn-key set of kit parts for a painless installation. I know the T56 has a great reputation, but for my car the TKO is the only way to go. Anyone looking to put a modern OD transmission in a 65-70 Mustang, or a 1979 and up, should call us first: 931.646.4TDM.
i have the tko 500 in my lx and it's a great transmission but if you want your car for cruisin around you can't beat the 6 speed, either way you'll have a mean stang!
