i have a running 460 that i had thought about building but i am thinking it is to much weight
if your gonna run a 460, it has to make atleast 600+ to make it worthwhile. On the flipside big bore, longstroke big blocks make so much off-idle torque they compensate for the added weight.
would it cost less to build the 460 since i alredy have the block
in a way ya, you need a serious set of heads. The 557 in my sig made 770 on pump gas but thats made possible by the head work I did among other things.
all im talking here is heads, fully ported, vasco springs, machined locks, titanium retainers, pc seals and manly severe duty valves. Now if we hunted down a set of discontinued A-429 Cobra Jet heads, you would be looking around 2-2.5k Remember big blocks are more expensive, match up a big head against a small head and it become real clear why they are called big blocks. Now if we went the used route from someone who is broke and needs money well then its alot cheaper. There are a few things you cant do with big blocks, first being use cheap parts in the valvetrain. The next thing is slapping a set of aftermarket heads on the short, unported, thats leaving major hp on the table. Take a look at damons 466 on the dyno. Antique A-429 heads, custom roller cam, vic jr intake, holley. Very mild http://www.zippyvideos.com/955684666..._2006/original
