Default 3:55 or 3:73 can’t decide?

I have a 95 5.0 cobra and want to install gears. It has stock 3:08s in rite now. I wanted to know from you guys that have 3:73 5.0s what the rpms are like when your cruising highway speed like 70mph. also any other things you dont like or info you have would be cool. The tranny is the t5 5spd. <edited><editID>svtcobra</editID><editDate>37780.8560763889</editDate></edited>

I have 4.10s in my '90 GT. At 70 mph I'm at 2500 rpm, at the end of the quarter mile I'm at 5000 in fourth gear. I'd go with the 3.73s, unless you're going to be adding serious power.

You didn't mention the tranny you have, but I have the aod in a '93 5.0, huge improvement in accelleration. I live 60 miles north of San Francisco and can make it to Reno without stopping for gas. I love my 3.73's.

I don't get it...3.73's are better for mileage somehow? If so explain because I am curious about the gear subject.

The 3.73's are a gross improvement over the enemic stock gears, especially in the automatic. While offering much greater accelleration, they still get good mileage over the 4.10's, and you're not doing 3grand at 65mph on the highway. Having no experience with the 5 speeds, I'll leave that part up to them.

well thanks for that...you are the gear master (until someone else says more things). my half-brother just got em redone in his mustang and i must say i am impressed at the monster acceleration from the i believe 2.27's that come stock on 02' GT's.

If you get the numbers right, you can drive around town all day long in 5th gear without laboring the motor. That is how I am able to get better gas mileage. Driving down the highway is pretty cool but not great. I lost a little mileage driving down the highway.

It depends on how much power you're gonna make and how fast you're gonna run in the quarter mile. I have 3.73's with a 5 spd and i like them. At the end of the quarter mile i'm at around 5500 rpm at 104 mph in fourth gear so it's perfect for my car now. If you plan on going faster than that i'd put 3.55's in it. I think i'm around 2500-2800 rpm at 70 mph. I've had it up to 130 mph with a little more left before redline. Gas mileage isn't too bad

I had 3.55 in my '86 GT with the T5. I personally wouldnt have gone any lower. Although I did go up from the 2.73 that it came with, so it was a huge difference for me. If you have the 3.10 stock, then you might want to go with the 3.73.</P>

I am out here in Southern California where freeway driving is essential, and I had no problems at all with the 3.55.</P>
